We started Day 4 of our training course with 2 energizers to loosen up and be ready for the day. Then we started with a simple exercise of debunking fears and stigmas of doing stand-up comedy and delivering jokes. By writing 3 fears of ours and then expanding on one of our fears to make it from something bad to something good with using ‘and then’.
After we finished with our personal fears, we were split into 5 groups and we used the topics we voted for yesterday and every group got its topic to work with. As a help and a guide we used the “The Comedy Bible” by Judy Carter that introduced us with the principles, strategies and techniques of stand-up comedy. We got to know about the setup of a joke, what is a premise and how to transform different ideas into jokes. For this reason we also used the four words (scary, weird, hard, stupid) from “The Comedy Bible”. It was to help us understand how to find a premise in our jokes and how to properly understand our views when delivering the joke.
After a coffee break, it was time for our groups to think of ten premises about our topic and how we will use them. What type of premises we can have, what type of jokes we can use and more in depth understanding of delivery. We then picked 4 or 5 premises and had to make jokes from them. We worked on those jokes until it was time for the lunch.
